Our Practices

Sustainability

Sustainability - here at 5 Hills Ranch we always focus on the sustainability of our farm while providing our products. A few things we practice in our day-to-day cattle handling to improve the quality of our land, improve the quality of life, and increase sustainability are as follows.

Rotational grazing, while the grass is good in the spring, summer, and fall, we utilize electric fences to section off our large pastures into smaller grazing paddocks and move the cattle, sometimes as often as every day. This helps concentrate the natural fertilizer the cattle are putting back into the ground. This also discourages selective grazing by our cattle and encourages them to eat all forage types available before we move them again. Forcing our cattle to have a variety of forage types allows for great biodiversity to flourish on the ranch.

No-till drilling - in the early spring and fall, we like to utilize no-till drilling to again increase the diversity of our cattle forage while also providing length to our grazing seasons as the weather begins to cool in the winter or in the presence of a drought.

Solar feeders - when growing and finishing our cattle on grain, we utilize solar-powered automatic feeders to cut down on labor hours and feed truck drive time, cutting down on the emissions needed to finish out our cattle. This also helps us save labor costs to continue to provide affordable products.
